When UCSF proposed its new campus at Mission Bay, it was clear from the community's standpoint that the new campus represented enormous opportunities for creative partnerships, employment, and cultural enrichment.  One of the main opportunities is the increased job development at this new campus, as well as its ability to encourage surrounding business growth.

Since its inception in late 2000, the Workforce and Economic Development Initiative has forged new and innovative partnerships with community-based organizations and businesses in the neighborhoods adjoining our still evolving Mission Bay campus. These partnerships demonstrate a new way of working with the community in a manner that is inclusive, participatory, and builds on the strengths and assets of our newest neighbors, as well as the University.  Workforce and Economic Development Initiative programs involve over 10 UCSF departments and 25 community-based organizations from throughout San Francisco. UCSF is the second largest employer in San Francisco with many diverse job opportunities. The Workforce and Economic Development Initiative Program, which gives access to these opportunities, has the potential to impact the San Francisco community in very positive ways.

UCSF Community Partnerships Program, Goodwill Industries and Robbin and Associates are proud to partner together to provide the community with this unique opportunity to improve the employment outcomes of people in reentry.  It is our goal to bring together management and staff of all types of employment and employment related programs serving ex-offenders that are concerned about improving employment and retention outcomes of people in reentry.

Workforce Development Activities

The workforce development initiative provides opportunities for low-income, southeast sector and other San Franciscans to gain access to employment and work experiences at UCSF. The initiative:

• identifies community based, non-profit training and employment agencies as partners and works with them to create customized training
• prepares participants for work at UCSF or in the private sector
• helps identify direct placement opportunities in career and temporary positions
• helps UCSF departments meet their diversity hiring goals by providing qualified applicants for open positions

Community Outreach Internship Program (COIP)

The Community Outreach Internship Program (COIP) provides seeks to help prepare participants for administrative assistant positions within UCSF by focusing on skilled-based training and providing an introductory internship placement.   In collaboration with a community based training partner COIP trains participants for employment by providing training activities which consist of the following:

• 10-week pre-internship training, skill assessment, and skill development
• A 5-month paid internship placement in a UCSF department
• Regular training seminars for interns during placement
• A mentorship program that matches interns to employee mentors at UCSF

The most recent COIP training cycle was completed in the summer of 2006 and in January 2008 the Community Partnership Program (CPP) convened a small steering committee consisting of former COIP interns, supervisors, and mentors in order to evaluate the past successes of the program, as well as identify areas for further development.  The steering committee will be a vital component in the development of a new training curriculum as CPP works to reconvene COIP with a target date of July 2008.

BEST Pro Professional Development Training

Recognizing the need for community based organizations which provide employment services to San Francisco’s diverse communities to have a well trained staff the Community Partnerships Program has once again collaborated with Jewish Vocational Services by providing funding and resources for JVS to offer its BEST Pro seminars to employment service providers.  The aim of BEST Pro is to improve service providers’ ability to pre-screen and match jobseekers to employment opportunities, and to increase standardization and professionalism in the field.

BEST Pro is a series of three training modules with each module consisting of four weekly seminars.  The three modules entitled Providing Job Search Assistance, Working With Employers, and Working With Participants provides workforce development professionals an opportunity to learn core competencies and best practices in the workforce development field through a series of lectures and interactive exercises taught by industry professionals and guest speakers.

The BEST Pro workshops will be held at UCSF’s Laurel Heights campus with the first workshop beginning on January 10th, 2008. 

Employer Days

UCSF's Employer Days connect various UCSF Human Resources Departments from both the medical center and campus to community based organizations that provide job-training and job-placement services, and the jobseekers they serve. The partnership between UCSF and community based organizations provides information about job opportunities, application procedures, and resume writing and interviewing techniques on a quarterly basis.

UCSF will be partnering with SF Goodwill to provide the next Employer Days event. This two day event is scheduled to take place on February 20th, 2008 and March 14th, 2008.

The business development initiative is currently on hiatus. However, a Coordinator for Economic Development and program are coming soon.
